On 27th July Rugby & Kenilworth Liberal Democrats selected Richard Allanach to be their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate [PPC] for the next General Election.
Cllr. Ann Blacklock Constituency Chairman said:
"Richard Allanach has lived in the constituency for 12 years and so is no stranger to Rugby & Kenilworth. I am very pleased that Richard has been selected and we are sure he will be an excellent parliamentary candidate and MP. At the Selection meeting Rugby & Kenilworth Liberal Democrat members were very lucky to have such able applicants to choose from, which made their decision all the more difficult."
Richard Allanach said:
"I am delighted to have been selected to as the PPC for Rugby & Kenilworth and am looking forward to the political battles ahead."
Richard Allanach added:
"Why throw my hat into the ring now? Basically, I am fed up with Andy King MP.
He promised us a referendum on electoral reform but reneged on that commitment. He promised us that he would oppose top-up fees for university students but voted to introduce them. He promised us peace but backed the invasion of Iraq.
On the 18th March 2003, when Andy King was voting to expel the UN Weapons Inspectors so that bombing and invasion could begin I was protesting outside the House of Commons. I believe that Andy King should be held to account for his actions on the Iraq issue.
And what of my second Conservative opponent - Jeremy Wright? His opposition to the Rugby Airport and the expansion of services from Coventry is based purely on NIMBYism. On the other hand the Liberal Democrat view is that unrestrained growth in air travel is environmentally harmful and adds to global warming. The first step is to end the bias towards aviation in fuel taxes. There must be a fairer tax system that would ensure that the airlines paid their fair share of the environmental cost of jet aircraft."
Richard Allanach continued:
"I am also keen to work with our members to build on the strong foundation of Liberal Democrat councillors and activists that already exists within Rugby & Kenilworth and to challenge for the seat.
But most of all I want to meet and get to know the people of Rugby & Kenilworth better. I want to meet and work with community groups and individuals. I want to show them how the Liberal Democrats can make a real difference.
Many people are disaffected with Labour, especially after the war in Iraq and the continuing problems in that country. There is an opportunity for the Liberal Democrats to provide a real challenge to Labour and the Conservatives. To show the electors of Rugby & Kenilworth that the Liberal Democrats are a real, fresh and dynamic alternative to both the tired old conservative parties.
We need to focus on change in government and change in political leadership. I have many years of experience in campaigning and would be happy to take the lead to point out the failure of the Labour government to deliver on their promises and their wholesale adoption of policies that are even more right wing than the Tories and on the other hand to demonstrate the inadequacy and ineptitude of the Conservatives."
