Kenilworth Liberal Democrats last night celebrated a sensational win in the Park Hill ward by-election, when Liberal Democrat candidate Alison Tyler won the vacant town council seat, beating the Conservative candidate Daphne Harrison by a clear margin, and seeing off a strong challenge from the Independent Rob Daniel (Kenilworth Regeneration). The Labour vote collapsed, with their candidate coming in fourth, just ahead of the English Independent candidate.
Full results were:
Alison Tyler Liberal Democrat 670
Daphne Harrison Conservative 623
Robert Daniel Kenilworth Regeneration 250
Maureen Hazelwood Labour 112
Brian Hadland English Independent 88
The by-election, caused by the sudden resignation of a Conservative town councillor, came at a difficult time for electors, in the middle of the school summer holidays. Despite this, and terrible weather on polling day, overall turnout was reasonable at 27.5%.
Alison Tyler said after the result was declared:
"I am honoured to have been chosen to represent the people of Park Hill. My thanks to all involved in an effective and vigorous campaign. I look forward to joining my fellow Park Hill councillors Dave Shilton and Doug Golby and the rest of the Liberal Democrat group on the town council."
Liberal Democrat group leader Councillor Patrick Ryan said:
"I am thrilled with this result. Despite the short notice and the difficulties posed by an election in the middle of the holiday season and in terrible weather we were able to run a good campaign. Alison is energetic and able and will have a real impact on the Town Council. She will add a lot of extra strength to our Lib Dem team."
Richard Allanach, the Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Rugby & Kenilworth constituency said:
"This is a fantastic outcome. Alison Tyler and her campaign team worked hard
and got the result they deserve. It shows that the Liberal Democrats are a growing force from inner city areas like Brent East to leafy and historic towns like Kenilworth."
"As for the Labour collapse, residents of Kenilworth who shared Labour's traditional values appear to have lost faith in what Tony Blair is doing to their party."
John Whitehouse, Campaign Organiser said:
"Alison was an excellent candidate, and I am sure that she will make a really good councillor representing the interests of Park Hill residents. The results on the day showed that we picked up good support across the ward, a clear indication that the Liberal Democrat message was put across well. My thanks to all of the members and supporters who gave up their time to help our campaign. It was definitely worth it!"
