The controlling Tory group on Kenilworth town council, supported by the independent councillor Trevor Martin, has blocked the motion put forward by Liberal Democrat councillor Ann Blacklock, proposing that a new civic centre for Kenilworth be built using environmentally-friendly principles.
Ann Blacklock said:
"We may have lost this vote, but we are not going to give up on this one. A lot of people feel the same as we do."
Councillor Pat Ryan
Councillor Pat Ryan, Liberal Democrat Group leader, said:
"When the civic centre is built, we should ensure that it incorporates as many elements of sustainability and energy conservation as possible. That is sensible in an age of global warming, and will be economical in the long run by minimising heating requirements.
What happened at the meeting was that the Tories turned it into a political issue, and Councillor Martin swallowed their line - hook, line and sinker!"
