The Conservative party's policy on flying was condemned at the Liberal Democrats Conference in Bournemouth on Sunday.
Richard Allanach
Speaking at the first session of the conference on Sunday morning the Liberal Democrats' prospective parliamentary candidate for Rugby & Kenilworth, Richard Allanach, exposed the inconsistency of the Conservative party's approach to flying. "In my constituency of Rugby & Kenilworth the Tories have joined us in stopping the government's proposals for a new airport at Rugby and voted not to give planning permission for a new terminal at Coventry airport. However at the same time as they have been voting against new airports they have also been attacking our policy to make fuel taxes fairer by taxing aviation fuel as well as motor fuel."
Richard Allanach said "The Conservatives talk tough on airports, but act soft on the causes of airports. Liberal Democrat policies aim to damp down the demand for flying by taxing it fairly. Currently other forms of transport fuel are taxed but the Conservatives want to give air travel a unique privileged status. Air travel places a major demand on fossil fuels and is a major contributor to global warming. As our contribution to developing a green economy we believe it should be subject to the same taxation as other forms of transport."
The Liberal Democrats conference was debating the report of MP John Thurso's commission on aviation.
