Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson Richard Allanach has called on Network Rail to co-operate with a scheme for the redevelopment of Rugby.
"Property developers St Modwen have an ambitious plan for the vast swathe of under-used land between Leicester Road and Mill Road" said Mr Allanach. "Their plans should be broadly welcomed. However there are a number of specific dangers which Rugby needs to guard against".
"With Junction 1 and Elliot Field we have seen the start of what could prove to be an alternative 'town centre' for Rugby springing up north of the railway line. There is potential for competition that could weaken the established centre. In an ideal world the two 'centres' would support one another. An example of this happening would be a group of people on a leisure trip to Rugby eating in the town centre and then going to the cinema or bowling in the new location to the north" he continued.
"This mutual support is most likely to happen when there are good links between both the centres. St Modwen's scheme provides for a significant improvement to the existing 'black path' link. Under their proposals this link would be made safer and would include proper provision for cycles and pushchairs. However for this plan to come to fruition Network Rail need to fully co-operate with the plans St Modwen have for the black path and for Rugby station itself" he added.
"Network Rail have never given the impression of being particularly interested in the needs of Rugby. It is vital that our elected representatives force them to take note and to take action on this occasion" he concluded.
