Liberal Democrats Launch Opinion Poll on More Police v ID Cards

December 23, 2004 5:53 PM

Richard Allanach, PPC for Rugby & Kenilworth, announced today that he had launched an opinion poll on the Rugby & Kenilworth Lib Dems website asking for people's views on whether they would prefer their taxes to be spent on more police to keep our streets safe or on ID Cards.

Richard Allanach said -

"Following the results of the Liberal Democrat survey in Rugby, which showed that over two thirds of those surveyed would rather see their taxes spent on more police to keep our streets safe, rather than on ID Cards, I thought it important to give the wider electorate the opportunity to express their views on this issue"

Richard Allanach continued -

"Margaret Thatcher thinks that ID Cards are "a Germanic concept completely alien to this country". Naturally, Tony Blair thinks they should be compulsory.

Michael Howard is paid to lead Her Majesty's opposition. Yet when it came to the vote he asked his MPs to support the government. On issue after issue whether it is the war on Iraq or compulsory ID cards the Tories just ape New Labour's policies."

Richard Allanach pointed out that -

"ID cards will cost upwards of £3 billion to implement. This money which could be better spent on more police to keep our streets safe.

ID cards do not stop terrorism. Hundreds of people were killed by the train bombers in Madrid despite ID cards being compulsory for Spanish citizens."
