Richard Allanach, the Liberal Democrats' candidate in the recent general election, has spoken out on Labour's plans to abolish the Warwickshire police force.
Richard Allanach said "During the general election I met a retired police sergeant who remembered the last time Warwickshire and Coventry had the same police force. He told me he was hardly ever in his own patch as he was always being sent into the city to sort out some problem there."
"If Warwickshire was merged with the West Midlands we could see all our local police being sent over to Birmingham. The police tax element of Council Tax has risen steeply in recent years and people want to see their local taxes spent on local services not sorting out other people's problems. Labour's police proposals are likely to be highly unfair to people in smaller towns like Kenilworth and Rugby" Mr Allanach added.
Mr Allanach conceded that Warwickshire was one of the UK's smallest forces and that this posed problems at times before saying "If Warwickshire has to go a merger with Northamptonshire would make far more sense as these are two similar counties and it is unlikely we would see our police sucked out of area to deal with someone else's problems. We already have one emergency service in the form of the air ambulance that operates successfully over our two counties."
