Local Liberal Democrats have reacted with delight to the news that Waitrose will be coming to Kenilworth as part of the redevelopment of Talisman Square.
Councillor Dave Shilton (Liberal Democrat, Park Hill), Chair of Warwick District Council, said:
"This is tremendous news for the town and for local people. Attracting a top quality operator will help to put the town centre back on its feet and make it a thriving centre. The District Council has spent a lot of time behind the scenes trying to get all parts of the jigsaw to fit together and to get a scheme that the town can be proud of."
Councillor John Whitehouse (Liberal Democrat, Abbey), Chairman of Kenilworth Liberal Democrats, said:
"A new Waitrose supermarket can be the key to retail revival in our town centre, as it has been in other similar towns. For example, Monmouth went through a very bad patch in the 1980's, but was turned round by the arrival of Waitrose about eight years ago. Other up-market stores followed, and suddenly Monmouth was back on the map for shoppers again.
The same thing can now happen for Kenilworth, and it's what the great majority of townsfolk want to see happen.
This is no time for complacency though - there's still a lot to be done, and a lot of changes to happen, before we get the shopping facilities that this town needs and deserves.
We aim to ensure that our town keeps looking forwards, not backwards."
Liberal Democrat councillors and campaigners have been at the forefront of actions to get Kenilworth Town Centre moving forward again, under their "Let's Get On With It" campaign banner. The latest edition of our regular Focus newsletter will be delivered to households across the town from this weekend on, and will lead with this good news story.
