The Liberal Democrat candidate in the forthcoming council by-election in Kenilworth St John's, Shirley Shilton, has set out the reasons why she wants to win the seat. She said:
"I am very keen to become a councillor so that I can be a voice for the people, especially those with problems. I want to see more police on the beat, to make people feel safer in their homes and on our streets.
I believe in more encouragement for local shops and small businesses to prosper in our town, to stop it becoming a ghost town. The fact that Waitrose is coming is wonderful news, but more is needed. If elected I will do everything I can to encourage Kenilworth people to shop locally. Let's put some pride back in our town."
Councillor Dave Shilton (Lib Dem, Kenilworth Park Hill) said:
"I'm very proud that Shirley has decided to stand for councillor in her own right, and I shall be giving her all the support that I can. She is a Kenilworth girl born and bred, and loves this town just as much as I do. If elected I know she will do a fantastic job for the people of St John's."
Councillor John Whitehouse (Lib Dem, Kenilworth Abbey), Chairman of Kenilworth Liberal Democrats, said:
"Liberal Democrats are excited that we have a local candidate of Shirley's calibre and reputation to fight these important by-elections. St John's ward has lacked any Liberal Democrat councillors for far too long. It's time for a change!"
