Pride In Our Neighbourhoods

March 2, 2006 8:00 AM

Rugby Liberal Democrats have released their budget proposals for Rugby Borough in which their top priorities are:-

  • Positive Futures for young people in the Borough.

The Liberal Democrats propose to increase the budget for this service by £50,000 to over £140,000. We want to expand the good work that is already carried under this programme by delivering outreach work in the hot spot areas and increasing the message about the dangers of drug, alcohol & substance misuse.

  • Pride in our Neighbourhoods

The Liberal Democrats propose to bring together the Council's activities on Public Realm, Street Watch, street furniture and environmental crime (graffiti etc.) into one single, streamlined service that will be targeted at bringing pride into our local neighbourhoods. This is about tackling graffiti, litter, better street furniture and working with local communities. The Liberal Democrats are allocating a total of £430,000 for these services.

  • Building Sustainable Communities

Liberal Democrats want to help people to act locally on climate change issues. This fund will award grants of up to £1000 to local communities to help fund new initiatives that are promoting renewable energy initiatives, such as wind, solar etc or energy saving such as replacing boilers etc. This fund will replace the existing Sustainable Projects fund.

Councillor Jerry Roodhouse

Cllr Jerry Roodhouse Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Rugby Borough Council said in introducing this year's budget proposals:-

"Liberal Democrats have clearly laid out our priorities. We wish to invest in our young people. We wish to invest in our Neighbourhoods. We wish to invest in making our communities more sustainable.

Liberal Democrats want to see a Cleaner, Greener, Safer & Healthier Borough. The electors of the Borough can clearly see from our proposals what they are getting.

We are also supporting changes to streamline the way the Borough Council works and will work across political divides to ensure that value for money is achieved.

Our proposals are built on a 4% increase in council tax (£6.66 for Band D) which will deliver medium term financial stability and, over time, will allow us to deliver a more prosperous Borough."

No one political party has control of Rugby Borough. A consensus has to be found. The Liberal Democrats will use as their touchstone the priorities as stated in our budget proposals.
