Cold still biting
Recent research and data collected from the West Midlands Health Observatory demonstrate that the deaths in winter have stayed fairly stable since 1981 with no real downward trend despite influenza vaccination and other programmes and recent milder winters all seem to be having no real impact. The census for 2001 shows that 4.6% of households in Rugby do not have central heating with New Bilton showing the highest number of pensioner households without central heating. The main causes are from respiratory diseases.
Cllr Jerry Roodhouse has consistently called on Rugby's MPs to act on fuel poverty and affordable warmth but they have always failed to act or seek the extra resources needed. The Sustainable Inclusive Communities Panel on the 18th Jan, chaired By Cllr Roodhouse, will be discussing the findings and exploring what Rugby Borough Council can do, along with other agencies, to find solutions to this problem.
Cllr Roodhouse said, "As we head further into winter it is surprising that as a society we have not solved this problem yet and it is not getting any better"
