Why is the recycling centre closing and when?
Hunters Lane is being closed for total refurbishment, as it has reached the end of its useful life and is in need of major maintenance. As the use of such civic amenity facilities has changed significantly since it was built, it has been decided to change the nature of the site to a split level recycling centre for household waste.
The new refurbished Household Waste Recycling Centre, will be designed to ensure it can meet the current and future recycling needs of the local residents.
Unfortunately the site is not big enough to be able to keep part of it open while the refurbishment takes place. Therefore the site is closing from 03/09/07 and will be re-opened in time for Easter 2008.
What do I do with my waste while the site is closed?
The are a number of options available for residents whilst the site is closed.
• Use free kerbside collections of waste and recycling provided by Rugby Borough Council.
• Take glass, paper, plastic bottles and drinks cans to the 'bring banks' located around Rugby. The two largest existing sites are located at:
? Tesco, Leicester Road,
? Featherbed Lane, car park
Extra 'bring banks' are being provided during the period whilst Hunters Lane is closed, the location of these extra sites is still being finalised.
You can also find your nearest facility on the 'recycle now' website: www.recyclenow.com or by ringing Rugby Borough Council on 01788 533533.
• If you live in the north of Borough, you can go to Lutterworth Household Waste Recycling Centre which residents will be able to use free of charge for household waste taken free at Hunters Lane.
• If you live to the south of Rugby Town Centre, you can go to the site at Stockton, which will be open seven days a week while Hunters Lane is closed.
• Rugby Borough Council also provide a bulky waste collection service and will collect large items at the kerbside for £7 per item for the first three items and £4 per item thereafter.
Why can't we have a temporary recycling centre in Rugby?
The main barriers to providing an alternative site are the planning and licensing requirements. Waste recycling facilities are heavily regulated by the Environment Agency who have strict rules about how waste can be collected. While, some time ago, we would have been able to provide a facility with a few skips and some steps, we are no longer able to do this due to changes in the regulations of waste management.
