The on going press reports and individual letters concerning the future of St Cross are clearly demonstrating the concerns of local people about wanting to see quality health care provided in Rugby.
New drugs and new ways of carrying out medical procedures keep coming apace, we now see more day cases as these modern techniques reduce the time that we need to be in hospital. The question that I have been seeking an answer to is how can we ensure that we keep and develop high quality health care in Rugby for Rugby people? Lord Darzi in his recent interim report sated that the NHS should be "Fair, Personalised, Effective and Safe" the report also sates that "A locally accountable NHS that is transparent and ensures that local decision processes are subject to greater public and clinical scrutiny and that any local case for change is led by clinicians" The local Government and Public Health Act 2007 has introduced a new public and patient involvement called LINKS and will give people the opportunity to say what they think about local services, check how local services are planned and run and feedback what people say about local services LINKS will become operational mid 2008. The Act also strengthens section 242 of the National Health Service Act 2006 and has placed a new duty to enhance consultation especially when commissioning services. The Overview & Scrutiny responsibility of local authorities also has a part to play.
Health issues are to important to become the political football it has as a politician I can see the reasons after all politicians need votes and health is emotive and at some point touches most of us. I am passionate about seeking out a solution for Rugby that truly reflects the needs of our varying communities one which involves local people has Warwickshire PCT the hospital trust UHCW, clinicians, politicians and local people working together all pulling in the same direction to deliver a world class local district hospital with top quality services available at the point of need to Rugby residents. My commitment is to seek out a lasting solution a starting point must be a Rugby forum where people can discuss and debate the future health needs which can feed directly to the Trust Board of the PCT and UHCW the tools are available to make it happen what is now needed is the will to break the log jam.
Yours truly,
Cllr Jerry Roodhouse Liberal Democrat Group Leader
