Lib Dem Councillors Ray Hassall and Karen Hamilton ran the half marathon for charity.
Birmingham's 2009 Half Marathon took place on Sunday 11 October 2009. Lib Dem Councillors Ray Hassall and Karen Hamilton joined thousands of other runners along the 13.1 mile route through the city centre and south Birmingham. They were running to raise money for Cancer Research and the British Legion.
The majority of entrants for the Birmingham Half Marathon were from the Midlands region, but there were also runners from across the UK from Aberdeen to Southampton. Entrants from outside the UK came from the United States (including Illinois, home of Birmingham's sister city Chicago) and around Europe from Barcelona to Zagreb in Croatia.
As well as the Birmingham Half Marathon, Olympic athletes were also running the IAAF (International Association of Athletics)/EDF Energy World Half Marathon Championships. Eritean Zersenay Tadese won the mens race in a time of 59 minutes and 35 seconds, taking his fourth successive World title. Mary Keitany of Kenya took gold in the womens race in 1 hour 6 minutes and 36 seconds, the fastest time of her career.
