Conservative Councillors blocked moves for a task group to look into the better provision of grit bins
Conservative Councillors on the powerful Rugby Borough Council Overview and Scrutiny Management Board blocked moves for a task group to look into the better provision of grit bins despite residents offering to pay for the bins out of their own pockets and the county council offering to fill the bins.
It was clear from the start of the meeting that the Conservatives had decided to block the council from discussing this matter and not allow the motion, put forward by Councillors Roodhouse and Mahoney who had had severe problems in their wards, going to a task group for investigation.
Councillor Jerry Roodhouse said, "We were gob smacked by the row of excuses put forward by the Conservatives. These ranged from, "The public wouldn't know how to use a spade and spread the salt" to "The Council might be blamed if the bins were not replenished during severe weather conditions. What was clear to us was that the Conservative Councillors did not want to spend any money on providing these bins or allow councillors to discuss it further."
He went on to say that he had seen buses sliding down hills on Kingsley Avenue and there had been a stream of reports of pedestrians ending up in hospital in our local papers. He asked, "Shouldn't we be putting community safety before pounds, shillings and pence?"
Meteorologists predict that the type of weather we endured this winter is likely to become the norm in future year's. We must adapt our service provision to reflect that, and not, as the Conservatives have done, hide our heads in the grit bins and hope it never happens again.
