Rugby School Debate - But Where Were Labour?12.12.45pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 15th Sep 2004
Richard Allanach, the Liberal Democrats' prospective parliamentary candidate for Rugby & Kenilworth, has at last been able to take part in a debate with one of his political opponents. Rugby School's politics society hosted a question and answer session with Richard Allanach and his conservative opposite number, Jeremy Wright, on Tuesday evening. About sixty sixth formers bombarded the two candidates with questions for around an hour. The issues raised covered a wide range of subjects, from Europe and fox hunting to whether or not taking action to secure more women candidates for Parliament was "political correctness taken to the point of madness". In August Richard Allanach challenged Andy King MP to debate with him the war on Iraq. Neither Andy King nor any representative of the Labour party took part in Tuesday's debate. Richard Allanach said "I hope we shall see a lot more events like this in the run up to the next general election. It is a great shame that the Labour party seem unwilling to roll their sleeves up and engage with the electors." For further details contact Richard Allanach on 07749 922048
