Rana on Brexit

Rana Rugby in EuropeRana Das Gupta, the Liberal Democrats Parliamentary Candidate for Rugby & Bulkington, has written to the local papers about Brexit and the current political situation.
Dear Editor,

The Liberal Democrats have always opposed Brexit and were arguing to stop it when it was deeply unfashionable to do so immediately after the 2016 result. Unfortunately, so keen was the Labour Leader for the UK to head for the exit door that Jeremy Corbyn was insisting Article 50 be invoked the day after the 2016 referendum result. This is because Mr Corbyn does not care for EU membership, beyond the needs of political management inside and outside the Labour Party.

Mr Corbyn's campaigning for Remain in 2016 was lukewarm because he didn't believe in the cause and he never has. Jeremy Corbyn has carried on in this fashion since the Brexit vote. He must realise that the only democratic way out of this mess is to have a People's Vote with remain on the ballot paper.

At conference in September in Bournemouth, we the Liberal Democrats, voted for a change in our manifesto to say that if we won an overall majority at the next General Election, we would cancel Brexit. I was at that debate and voted in favour of that motion.

I can tell you that our principle aim during that debate was to support another democratic second referendum. However, the change in manifesto was made because we do not trust the opposition and we do not believe that the current government would allow such a second referendum.

Yours sincerely,

Rana Das Gupta
