Charter needed to help tenants and support landlords

Rugby Liberal Democrats want to see Rugby Borough Council adopt a Private Rented Sector Charter to help tenants and support landlords.

Private Renters' Charters exist to set out standards the law demands from all private landlords and agents.

If the landlord or agent does not meet these standards, tenants can contact any of the organisations signed up to the Charter. They will then work to find the best way to improve the tenant's situation and take effective action.

Supply is currently outstripping demand in Rugby's private rented sector and Rugby Borough Council is working on a new Housing Strategy for 2018-2020.

Commenting Councillor Tim Douglas (Paddox Ward) said:

"Most landlords and agents meet the legal standards required to rent out property. However, the number of people living in the private rented sector is increasing. More rules and regulations are being placed on landlords by the Government. These rules change frequently and are complex. Rugby needs a Private Renters' Charter to help tenants and support landlords. The Charter would set out the standards the law demands of landlords and agents. By signing up landlords and agents would be confirming that they rent out property that is safe and secure. I've been working with officers at the Council and Rugby's Landlord Forum to develop this idea and ensure that it is part of Rugby Council's Housing Strategy moving forward. I believe by working together we can develop housing policy that works for all."
