Labour and Greens must support Lib Dems to defeat Tories

12 Nov 2019

Responding to the news that Nigel Farage's Brexit Party will not be standing a candidate in Rugby & Bulkington, Liberal Democrats candidate Rana Das Gupta said:

"At the European Parliament elections in May, Liberal Democrats beat the Tories, Labour and the Greens in Rugby before losing narrowly to the Brexit Party. It's clear from Nigel Farage's comments that he is running scared of the Liberal Democrats as the strongest Remain party in areas like Rugby & Bulkington.

"It's also now clear that Boris Johnson's Conservatives and the Brexit party are now one and the same with both wanting to see an extreme Brexit that will damage our local economy, public services and limit opportunities for our children and grandchildren. Liberal Democrats are the only party at this election that can take seats like Rugby & Bulkington from the Conservatives and stop Brexit.

"With the Brexit party supporting the Conservatives and not standing, Labour and Green voters must support the Lib Dems to ensure that the Tories do not win in Rugby and Bulkington."

The number of votes cast in Rugby for each party standing in the European Parliamentary election which took place on Thursday 23 May 2019 were:

The Brexit Party - 10,987

Liberal Democrats - 6,255

Conservative and Unionist Party - 3,330

Green Party - 3,140

Labour Party - 2,937

UK Independence Party (UKIP) - 1,224

Change UK - The Independent Group - 1,075
