Lib Dem calls lead to Private Sector Housing Charter
At a Full Meeting of Rugby Council on Tuesday 26 February 2019 Councillors voted to introduce a Private Sector Housing Charter for Rugby Borough. The idea of introducing a Charter was put forward and developed by Councillor Tim Douglas (Paddox).
The Charter provides a quick and easy way for all private renters to find out what their rights are, what standards they should expect, and where to go for help.
The key message within the Charter is that every private renter has the right to live in a safe and secure home and be treated fairly by their landlord or letting agent.
It's estimated that there around 5,000 Private rented properties in Rugby.
Commenting, Cllr Tim Douglas (Paddox), said:
"A decline in social housing and a lack of affordable housing means that more and more people, particularly vulnerable members of our community, rely on the private rented sector. Legislation affecting the sector is amended regularly with new laws introduced frequently. Having a Charter is important to help tenants and support landlords. Once introduced the Council must ensure the Charter is kept up to date and landlords, agents and tenants sign up and use it."
