Politics is changing - Cllr Jerry Roodhouse

Councillor Jerry Roodhouse has written to the local papers about the changing landscape of British politics, the need for a People's Vote to end the Brexit stalemate and the need to change the voting system so it is fit for purpose.

Dear Editor,

The local council and European elections are over, and the dust is settling the political landscape has also changed.

The local and Euro elections have seen the Liberal Democrats do well we increased our share of the vote we have more Councillors and MEPs. A big thank you to those of you who voted for us.

The political world has been shifting for some months now. I stated in the New Year that the political system we have in the UK is broken and that the country is now divided the old two-party system must now come to an end it has not and is not serving us well.

A General Election is needed is the cry, but I ask for what purpose to change from blue to red? For what purpose? The Brexit Party is now saying it will stand candidates across the UK if a General Election is called my fear is that this will make the divisions in our country even wider, a new Conservative leader will only drive that wedge to ensure it is wider, Labour is still unsure trying to please everyone.

From the start of this process the Liberal Democrats have argued that the we need a People's Vote in order to bring this issue to a result. Our voting system also needs to change so that it truly reflects the value of your vote. The old two parties are sitting in the Westminster bubble calculating how they can hold onto or get power whilst overlooking a growing divide in our country.
