Rugby Liberal Democrats believe we must use the Rugby Union World Cup to maximise the town's exposure and invite the winning nation to visit with the Webb Ellis trophy.

They have submitted a notice of motion, due to be debated at a forthcoming Rugby Borough Council meeting on Thursday 18 July 2019.

The Rugby Union World Cup will take place in Japan between Friday 20 Sep 2019 and Saturday 2 Nov 2019.

The motion proposes that the Council considers ways to maximise this important international event to bring tourism and exposure to the borough as the home of the game. This should include working with businesses, residents and Rugby School to promote the matches and the joy of Rugby as a sport to watch and participate.

Commenting, Cllr Tim Douglas (Paddox Ward) said: "It's vital that we maximise this important sporting event to increase tourism, healthy living and exposure for the town. It would be fantastic to have the winners come to Rugby and parade the Webb Ellis Cup."

Cllr Craig McQueen (Eastlands Ward) added: "The Rugby Union World Cup is a great opportunity to promote the town and bring the whole community together. It's also an opportunity to learn about Japanese culture and celebrate diversity."
