Winning seats in Rugby and across the country

Rugby Liberal Democrats had a successful local election campaign holding Council seats in Paddox and Rokey & Overslade Wards and gaining a seat in Eastlands.

In Paddox Ward Noreen New was re-elected on a good turnout of 41%. In Rokeby & Overslade Ward Bill Lewis was re-elected with an increased majority on a turnout off 40%. Bill will now become the Deputy Mayor and then Mayor of the Borough in 2019 until 2020. In Eastlands Ward Craig McQueen was elected with a majority off 332 with a turnout of 33% taking Eastlands back from the Conservatives.

Across the country the Liberal Democrats have increased our number of Councillors and taken control of several Councils. All told, we've made net gains of +75 and elected 536 Liberal Democrat Councillors.

Commenting on the local election results, Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable said:

"These are our best set of local election results in a decade and that is thanks to the outstanding efforts of our members. The Liberal Democrats enjoyed gains across England, from Hull to Gosport, Liverpool to West Oxfordshire, Sunderland to Richmond."

"These results show a strong future for the Liberal Democrats. We are making gains against both a Conservative party driven by their right wing, and a left-wing Labour party absorbed by Corbyn's dated economic vision."
