Aristocratic visit to Ashlawn Road
Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Joan Walmsley will undertake a fact finding visit in Rugby on Friday 14 November 2014. She will be looking at the likely impact of the proposed Ashlawn Road development on traffic conditions in Dunchurch village, Bawnmore Road, Ashlawn Road, Percival Road and Dunchurch Road.
Cllr Bill Lewis will brief her on the potential impact on flood risk, schools and local health services.
(We should point out that the Liberal Democrats want to reform the House of Lords and replace the current mixture of hereditary peers, bishops and political appointees with direct elections. The coalition government agreement stated that "We agree to establish a committee to bring forward proposals for a wholly or mainly elected upper chamber on the basis of proportional representation" and indeed the 2010 conservative manifesto had even said "We will work to build a consensus for a mainly-elected second chamber to replace the current House of Lords …" (page 67). Sadly David Cameron was not able to contain a rebellion by his own backbenchers against this policy and this is one part of the coalition agreement that is not being put into effect. So whilst we have the current imperfect system we will work with it to try to get action on the issues that matter to Rugby.)
