Campaigning leads to bandstand repairs – Rugby Lib Dems
After months of campaigning Eastland Ward Councillors Neil Sandison, Sue Roodhouse and Dale Keeling have welcomed the news that repair work including upgrading the bandstand at Whitehall Recreation Ground will take place.
Rugby Borough Council is consulting on planned improvements to Whitehall Recreation Ground, after confirming that work to give the park a facelift has already started.
A topographical survey began on the site, also known as the Rugby Recreation Ground, on Friday 5 May, and restoration work on the bandstand is scheduled to begin later in the year.
Residents and community groups are being asked to give the council feedback so that their suggestions can be incorporated in the final plans.
Residents and visitors can find out more about the park and consultation at www.rugby.gov.uk/whitehallrec, or by looking out for consultation materials at venues around the town.
Commenting, Councillor Neil Sandison, said:
"Residents have told us that Whitehall Rec deserves a face-lift and the bandstand should be repaired. It is a key community asset that we all enjoy. My fellow Eastlands Councillors and I have campaigned for the improvements for months and it's great to see Rugby Council react. We now urge residents to make further suggestions to the council to ensure that the work continues to reflect what the local community wants and needs."
Councillor Dale Keeling added:
"The 'online campaign' was signed by nearly 600 residents, this included former residents of Rugby who live as far away as Australia and Canada. Many residents expressed their concern of a likely demolition and many who signed the petition online said the Bandstand brought back many fond memories from a 'first kiss' to being described as 'an icon of my childhood.'"
