Can I stand for election to Rugby Borough Council or Warwickshire County Council ?

In brief Candidates must be

1 Either EU citizens or Commonwealth citizens with an unrestricted right to live in the UK.

2 and registered to vote in the Rugby Borough area for a Rugby Borough election or registered to vote anywhere in Warwickshire for a Warwickshire County Council election. (There are other options which involve living in the area, owning property in the area or working in the area - see the Electoral Commission guidelines if you are not registered to vote here).

In brief candidates must not be

3 Employed by the local authority you want to stand for [although there are some exceptions eg for teachers]

4 The subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order.

5 Have been sentenced to three months or more in jail [whether a suspended sentence or not] at any time in the past five years.

6 Disqualified from standing for election

7 Employed by another local authority in a politically restricted post.
