Climate Change and how Rugby could benefit from the clean revolution with Ed Gonҫalves

4 Apr 2015

The Liberal Democrats' parliamentary candidate for Rugby has written this piece on climate change.

"It astonishes me that some politicians still use 'doubt' as an excuse not to act on climate change, which must be the biggest challenge humanity faces in modern times. Over 95% of expert climate scientists agree that climate change is serious, man-made, and that we need to act urgently. If you know any scientists, then you will know how difficult it is to get 95% of them agreed on anything! Yet they are absolutely clear and consistent when it comes to climate change.

If I was about to board a plane, and I was told that 95% of scientists agreed that plane was definitely going to crash, I would disembark pretty sharpish. We need to put acting on climate change at the very top of the political and economic agenda.

We should also see acting on climate change as the major business and economic opportunity which it represents. The clean energy and technology market has, for a number of years now, been growing far faster than the rest of the economy, both here in the UK and globally. It is creating more jobs than other energy sectors, and they are better paying. The return on investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy and low carbon infrastructure are among the best available.

With the conclusion of a new climate treaty later this year, there is going to be huge demand from investors for a huge ramping up of clean energy and technology. Rugby, with its industrial and engineering base, and excellent transport networks, is well-placed to benefit from this clean industrial revolution - provided it has a Member of Parliament who is loudly championing the area, its workers and skills base".
