Concerns raised over halt to green bin Christmas collections

Rugby Liberal Democrat Councillor Marion Nash (Rokeby and Overslade) has raised concerns that those who pay for the green bin collection have been told the bins won't be collected on two collection dates over the Christmas period.

Information from Rugby Borough Council says that they are suspending the service for a short period this Christmas. The last fortnightly green garden waste collections before Christmas will take place between 4 December and 15 December 2017. The Council will restart the fortnightly collection service between 8 January and 19 January 2018.

Rugby Liberal Democrat Councillors voted against the introduction of the green bin charge in February, a move that sees only garden waste collected and not food waste as the service previously provided. Instead, Rugby Liberal Democrats tabled a motion which would have seen the green waste collection service continue for everyone for another 12 months whilst a solution was found for the sustainability and longevity of the service.

Commenting, Councillor Marion Nash, said:

"Residents have paid for a regular collection and this is what they should receive. Many people take time off over the Christmas and New Year period and often use it to clean up their garden. Those, like me, who have concerns should be contacting the Council to make their voices heard and ensure they get the full collection timetable that they have paid for."
