Countryside Parkland in Trust
The Oxford Canal is nationally recognised as one of the most scenic canal routes in Great Britain. The stretch that runs through Rugby attracts some 10,000 visitors to the borough each year. The towpath is well used by local residents for a breath of fresh country air. Work is about to start on 6.2000 homes on the former radio mast site that abuts it but there has been no clear direction by the council on how the canal corridor and green spaces will be sustained for future generations to enjoy and use or how the local habitat will be protected from becoming degraded.
Cllr. Neil Sandison and Jerry Roodhouse are calling for the area to be designated as a countryside parkland held in trust for future generations of Rugbeians. We are currently in negotiations with council officers and the developer Urban and Civic. We will keep you informed of our progress.
