Coventry NHS Trust lets Rugby down (21 Dec)
Last week all NHS trusts were struggling to ensure they met their target of seeing 95% of all accident and emergency (A&E) cases within four hours. But some trusts were failing more than others.
Coventry NHS Trust failed not only to meet the target but also fell well short of last week's national average of a 90% success rate. Only 85% of A&E cases were seen within four hours. On 176 occasions ambulances were queuing outside Walsgrave for more than half an hour before their patients were seen and even after having been seen and assessed there were 139 patients who had to wait for more than four hours before being admitted to a ward.
Coventry NHS Trust is not providing the services Rugby needs. But there were several NHS Trusts across the country, dedicated to providing services to a small town like Harrogate, Bedford, Ipswich and Salisbury, who managed to come very close to meeting the national target even in last week's trying conditions.
