Fighting for Fair Benefits

30 Oct 2012

Local Liberal Democrat Councillors Neil Sandison and Jerry Roodhouse, along with New Bilton Candidate Dave Merritt met with Steve Webb, Lib Dem Minister, to press home the case for fairer benefit changes.

During this time they explained the potential impact of benefit changes and Universal Credit on the public.

Cllr Neil Sandison said,

Our meeting with Steve was very useful. We heard about the transition funding for Council Tax benefit changes and also about the failure of Labour to support an amendment that would see extra money for local Councils such as Rugby.

We will take our local issues to the Government and ensure that Ministers hear what is happening on the front line, regardless of who is in power."

The West Midlands Region Liberal Democrat Conference supported a motion by the Rugby Group calling for a higher rate of VAT on luxury items and a mansion tax, along with taxation that should fall on companies that avoid it at present.
