At Warwickshire County Council on Tuesday 15 December 2020, Warwickshire Liberal Democrats put forward a motion calling on greater support for Eco schools.

The Eco-Schools Programme is pupil-led, involving hands-on learning that gets the whole school and the wider community involved in exciting environmental projects.

The aim of the motion as proposed by the Liberal Democrat Group is to get schools thinking because the Eco School initiative provides the framework to look at all environmental issues.

Despite amendments from the Conservative Group watering down the proposals, the motion was passed.

Commenting, Warwickshire Lib Dem Group Leader Cllr Jerry Roodhouse (Eastlands) said:

"The pandemic has created a re-evaluation of society and a desire to make a fairer, more caring and greener way of living in the future. Schools and young people are at the heart of this and the Eco-Schools programme is an ideal way for schools to embark on a meaningful path towards improving the environment in both the school and the local community. We must maximise all opportunities available to us."

Council recognises that schools and education are a critical part of tackling climate change it also recognises that the Eco schools programme needs reinvigoration across Warwickshire with the ambition that all schools can achieve green flag status.

Council requests that

1. That an audit takes place of all schools across Warwickshire as to their status in regard to Eco School, this audit should also ask what support they need.
And

2. That the findings are reported to the Climate Change group and Portfolio Holder with recommendations on what actions need to be taken.
