Liberal Democrats demand better on plastics – sign our letter

Liberal Democrats are committed to ending the senseless and wasteful use of plastics and would: ban the use of non-recyclable single-use plastics that have affordable alternatives; implement a deposit system for all container products; and require all packaging to include recyclability options.

In the Coalition Government, the Liberal Democrats introduced a 5p charge on plastic bags - which reduced their use in the UK by 86%.

Following a motion put forward by Rugby Liberal Democrat Councillors Tim Douglas and Noreen New in February 2018, Rugby Borough Council's Scrutiny Committee will now look at how the Council can reduce plastic waste.

If you demand better on plastics add your name to our open letter to Michael Gove, Secretary of State for the Environment https://www.libdems.org.uk/save-our-seas

Dear Michael Gove,

Our oceans are under threat. Plastic is having a devastating effect on our seas and destroying marine life. A horrific 8 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year.

The Government must act now to stop the excessive use of plastic which ends up in our waters and poisons or suffocates precious sea creatures.

We ask you to:

  1. Commit to a Plastic-Free Charterto eradicate unnecessary plastic waste from Government Departments and set an example to businesses and consumers.
  2. Tackle our throw-away cultureby providing incentives for reuse and recycling, including a plastic bottle return scheme and a 5p charge on disposable coffee cups.
  3. Encourage businesses to reduce plastic packaging and introduce plastic free aisles in supermarkets.
  4. Work closely with other countries to find global solutionsto tackle the crisis of ocean pollution.
  5. Invest in research and developmentinto non-plastic alternative materials which are cost effective and sustainable in the long-term.

Please commit to making real change to protect our oceans before it's too late.

Yours sincerely,
