Only the Liberal Democrats scrutinise the performance of Rugby Borough Council
Today the Council's cabinet had a big agenda. There were the financial and other performance data for last year, there were decisions on whether or not to authorise additional expenditure of £6 million this year (see http://rugby.lib.dm/a6ZlM ) and the vexed question of whether or not to finally publish the allowances and expenses claimed by councillors last year (see http://rugby.lib.dm/a5Zll ) .
None of the conservative councillors present asked a question. The matter of the works service unit's failure to match expectations (see http://rugby.lib.dm/a3ZkG ), the shortfall on the collections account (see http://rugby.lib.dm/a3Zll ) and the £1.2 million asset sales figures went entirely unscrutinised (see http://rugby.lib.dm/a7Zll ).
None of the town's labour councillors asked a question. In fact it would have been very difficult for them to do so as none of them bothered to even turn up.
Only the Liberal Democrats, in the shape of Cllr Neil Sandison (Eastlands), questioned the figures for councillors allowances and the performance of the Council last year.
