Rugby Borough Council decisions 9 December 2014

10 Dec 2014

It took Rugby Borough Council just forty minutes to make five key decisions for the future of our town last night.

First no one spoke against Cllr Neil Sandison's green ranger proposal and it was referred to a committee for further consideration - see http://rugbylibdems.org.uk/en/article/2014/975841/neil-sandison-s-green-ranger-scheme-gets-the-amber-light .

Secondly the Council agreed to be lead bidder in a scheme to provide more housing support for vulnerable young people. (It would have been very embarrassing had the Council rejected this proposal as councillors were informed last night that they had already been successful in their bid and would have a grant of over £60,000 to spend before the end of the financial year).

Thirdly the Council agreed to the changes to the Council Tax Reduction scheme which it had consulted on this Autumn but not without witnessing some last minute chaos in Labour ranks as they proposed spending an extra £75,000 without saying how the money was to be found - see http://rugbylibdems.org.uk/en/article/2014/975589/labour-rebel-against-leader-over-council-tax .

Fourthly whilst it was accepted that the county council had taken Rugby's request for longer opening hours for the Hunters Lane recycling depot and kicked it into touch by making the request the subject of a "review" councillors from all three parties expressed their support for longer opening - see http://rugbylibdems.org.uk/en/article/2014/975835/all-party-support-for-longer-hunters-lane-recycling-centre-opening .

Fifthly the proposed changes to Bilton's polling stations were agreed.

In addition the Liberal Group leader Jerry Roodhouse secured some reassurances from leading conservative councillors about the state of Rugby's finances - see http://rugbylibdems.org.uk/en/article/2014/975837/jerry-roodhouse-presses-tories-on-rugby-council-s-financial-performance .

It should be noted that many of the key decisions about Rugby's future are no longer made by the full Council but rather are decisions made by Rugby's cabinet - see http://rugbylibdems.org.uk/en/article/2014/974060/rugby-cabinet-or-council .
