Shoulder to shoulder on safety barriers

23 Feb 2015

This Sunday (22 February 2015) churchgoers, residents and local councillors stood shoulder to shoulder to demand that Warwickshire County Council put back the safety barriers it has removed from Rugby's gyratory.

Without consultation the county council has instructed its contractors to remove safety barriers outside Rugby Methodist Church and elsewhere, including the safe walking routes to several schools.

In March last year a car swerved off the gyratory and narrowly missed guests using the night shelter at the church. Its impact was cushioned by the safety railings which have now been taken down.

Cllr Neil Sandison stated "Churchgoers to Rugby Methodist Church and New Union Street and Firs Drive residents feel particularly vulnerable since the barriers were removed. This stretch of road has a very bad record of collisions and the barriers have protected both pedestrians and local properties from more serious damage. We intend to keep on campaigning with residents and churchgoers to get the barriers re-instated on safety grounds".
