On Friday 5 May it was announced that the Special Council meeting of Rugby Borough Council that was due to be held on 25 May to consider the submission draft of Rugby's Local Plan has been postponed on the advice of senior officers.

The Local Plan sets out a vision, policies and proposals for future development and land use in Rugby Borough. The meeting will now take place on 21 June at the BENN Hall.

The press release from Rugby Council states that the delay of four weeks will not affect materially the council's draft timetable on submission of the Local Plan.

Reacting to the news, Councillor Tim Douglas, said:

"At the last full council meeting, when the Local Plan was discussed, the Liberal Democrat group were shouted down and accused of 'rabble rousing' by the other two political groups when we proposed to extend the consultation process to ensure that all the facts around infrastructure from the County Council were joined up and matched what the Borough Council was doing. We were instructed that this would not be possible as we had to get on with the process as soon as possible. It is now clear that this could have taken place. It is not surprising, we are now left questioning the political motivation behind the latest decision to delay and Rugby Lib Dems hope that this is not a cynical tactic from the Conservatives who run Rugby Borough Council to bury bad news before the General Election."
