We need a compost revolution
After Rugby Borough Council's decision to charge residents £40 a year for a green bin from April 2017, Rugby Liberal Democrats say we need a compost revolution to improve how we recycle food and green waste.
Rugby Liberal Democrats have teamed up with Master Composters John and Sandy Young to hold a community composting event at the GEC recreation ground changing rooms on Hillmorton Road on Saturday 11 March from 9:30am until 1:30pm.
The event is to showcase what action we can take as individuals with food and green waste. Also invited is Love Food Hate Waste (www.lovefoodhatewaste.com) the charity which aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste and help people take action.
Commenting, Councillor Jerry Roodhouse, said:
"In the true liberal tradition we want to empower people to take control of their lives and have a positive impact on their daily routines. Rugby Liberal Democrats don't agree with the green bin charge and we have always felt that there is a better way.
"The event on 11 March will show some easy practical everyday things in the home that can ensure that we waste less food, which will ultimately benefit our purses and the environment too. It is open to all so please come along."
Notes to Editor
At a meeting of the full Rugby Borough Council on 7 February 2017, Rugby Liberal Democrats tabled a motion which would have seen the green waste collection service continue for everyone for another 12 months whilst a solution is found for the sustainability and longevity of the service. This motion was not supported by Conservative and Labour Councillors.
